Keep Watch!
Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Doctors in Canada have sparked outrage after proposing that euthanasia for newborn babies with severe disabilities could be considered a form of “care.” The Quebec College of Physicians (CMQ), represented by Dr. Louis Roy, suggested that infants with “grave medical syndromes” or “severe deformations” might be eligible for medically assisted death. The CMQ reiterated its position earlier this week, arguing that in such cases deliberately ending a child’s life should be recognized as a medical option. Critics, however, warn that this marks a dangerous expansion of Canada’s euthanasia program. Wesley J. Smith of the Discovery Institute called the idea “infanticide,” arguing that once killing is normalized as a solution to suffering, it becomes difficult to draw moral limits.
Canada’s assisted suicide laws have rapidly expanded since they were first introduced in 2016. In 2021, lawmakers removed the requirement that death be “reasonably foreseeable” for applicants, and by 2024, legislation paved the way for euthanasia based solely on mental health grounds beginning in 2027. Recommendations have even been made to extend euthanasia to children and prisoners under certain conditions. If adopted, the CMQ’s recommendations would align Canada with the Netherlands, where euthanasia for babies is already permitted—drawing chilling comparisons to Nazi-era practices. Critics such as law professor Trudo Lemmens warn that once physicians normalize euthanasia, the practice becomes increasingly difficult to contain. With over 15,000 Canadians dying through assisted suicide in 2023—nearly 5% of all deaths—pro-life advocates like Catherine Robinson of Right to Life UK argue that the proposal is discriminatory and devalues the most vulnerable members of society, who need compassion and support, not elimination.
