Canada Quietly Advances Digital ID System

Jul 25, 2025

Canada’s federal government is quietly moving forward with plans for a nationwide digital ID system, relying on private consultants to bypass formal budget disclosures and parliamentary oversight. Internal documents reveal that the Department of Social Development deemed the project too complex for in-house development and opted to outsource, citing international best practices and a lack of internal expertise. A government memo dated May 20 titled “Digital Credentials Issue” outlined the strategy to consolidate numerous access systems into a single digital portal for easier and more secure access to government services. Officials insist the system will include robust privacy protections and that participation will remain voluntary—for now.

Despite the government’s reassurances, concerns are mounting over transparency, cost, and potential overreach. Past attempts at implementing digital ID systems have failed due to lack of parliamentary approval and accountability. One previous initiative cost taxpayers $6.4 million before being abandoned, while a proposed partnership with the World Economic Forum never came to fruition. As Ottawa pushes ahead under the radar, critics warn that the federal digital ID project could erode privacy and set the stage for broader surveillance and centralized control under the guise of convenience and modernization.
