Canada to Surpass 100K Assisted Suicides

Mar 11, 2026

Canada’s controversial Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program is approaching a troubling milestone. Government data indicates that the nation is on track to surpass 100,000 medically assisted suicides before the program reaches its tenth anniversary in June. In 2024 alone, 15,767 Canadians were euthanized through the state-administered system—representing more than 5 percent of all deaths in the country that year. The numbers reveal a rapid rise in participation since the program began, with an estimated average of roughly 45 people per day choosing government-assisted death.

Critics warn that what was initially presented as a limited option for the terminally ill has expanded dramatically. Reports have surfaced of patients receiving approvals within the same day, and some advocates claim individuals suffering from depression or non-terminal conditions have been encouraged to consider the program. The scale of the program has now surpassed the number of Canadian soldiers killed during World War II. Religious leaders and pro-life advocates have described the trend as a profound societal failure, warning that assisted suicide can quickly shift from a “choice” to a perceived expectation—especially among the elderly, disabled, and economically vulnerable.
