Canada has quietly enacted one of the most sweeping cybersecurity and surveillance laws in its history, granting government officials extraordinary powers in the name of national security. Bill C-8 allows cabinet ministers to order telecommunications companies to suspend service to specific individuals, issue secret directives, and collect information without prior judicial approval. Critics warn that the law opens the door to the collection of subscriber records, location data, browsing histories, metadata, and other personal information, all while allowing many of these orders to remain hidden from public view. What was introduced as a measure to protect critical infrastructure has instead ignited fears of expanding government surveillance and diminishing privacy rights.
The legislation also gives authorities broad powers to compel telecommunications companies to hand over information and potentially alter network operations. Privacy advocates, legal scholars, and civil liberties organizations have expressed concern that the law could weaken encryption protections and create mechanisms for backdoor access to private communications. Many of the proposed safeguards, including prior judicial authorization and stronger transparency requirements, were removed before final passage. Critics argue that Canadians may now find themselves subject to government monitoring without warrants, with little opportunity for oversight or public accountability.
