Canada’s Expanding Culture of Death

Aug 12, 2025

This year’s Canadian euthanasia conference, hosted at a Sheraton in Vancouver, brought together some 300 professionals for what appeared to be a typical weekend of networking, catered meals, and social events. Yet beneath the polished setting lies a sobering reality—only a decade ago, the primary work of many attendees, delivering lethal injections to end a patient’s life, was considered homicide. Since Parliament legalized Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) in 2016, what was once condemned has been recast as a legitimate medical service—performed with the casual routine of any other procedure, and often with less delay. Today, MAID accounts for roughly one in every twenty deaths in Canada, surpassing the toll from Alzheimer’s and diabetes combined, positioning the nation as a global leader in the practice of state-sanctioned death.

What began as a “mercy” for those facing imminent death has now expanded to include people with serious but non-terminal conditions. Within two years, eligibility will open to those with mental illness alone, and recommendations have already been made to extend it to minors. Cloaked in the language of compassion, equality, and patient autonomy, Canada’s rapid descent into what Scripture describes as calling evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20) reveals a society hardened to the sanctity of life. This cultural embrace of death reflects the prophetic picture of the last days—when moral boundaries are erased, depravity increases, and human life is devalued—setting the stage for a world ready to accept even greater forms of darkness.
