ChatGPT Agent: Power, Peril, and AI Risk

Jul 24, 2025

OpenAI’s latest advancement, the ChatGPT Agent, signals a major shift in artificial intelligence with its ability to autonomously perform complex tasks like booking travel, conducting research, and generating editable reports. This next-generation tool blends capabilities from previous OpenAI systems to offer real-time interaction with websites, data analysis, and personal assistant-like features. It can securely prompt logins, run code, create presentations, and complete tasks with limited user input—all within a secure virtual environment. While OpenAI emphasizes user control and permission-based actions, the tool’s efficiency and power mark a bold step forward in integrating AI into everyday life.

However, the capabilities of the ChatGPT Agent have sparked significant concern over its potential misuse, particularly in aiding the creation of biological or chemical weapons. OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework has flagged the agent as “high” in biorisk potential, highlighting its ability to assist even novice users in dangerous tasks. Safety researchers acknowledge the tool’s dual-use nature, capable of both life-saving breakthroughs and catastrophic misuse. To mitigate these risks, OpenAI has implemented strict safeguards—blocking harmful prompts, enforcing expert review, and limiting the tool’s access to sensitive tasks. CEO Sam Altman has urged caution, describing the system as experimental and warning of unforeseen vulnerabilities, reinforcing the need for ongoing vigilance as AI moves deeper into critical areas of life and infrastructure.
