Sudan’s devastating civil war may have crossed another horrifying threshold, as newly revealed documents, videos, photographs, and intercepted communications provide what experts describe as credible evidence that the Sudanese military secretly developed and stockpiled chlorine-based chemical weapons. Materials reviewed by major news organizations reportedly show makeshift chemical bombs being manufactured, tested in remote desert locations, and prepared for use against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Some documents refer to munitions containing “choking gas,” while messages indicate that as many as 290 chemical weapons may have been stockpiled. Investigators also found evidence suggesting chlorine intended for civilian water treatment may have been diverted into the weapons program. Sudan’s military and its leader, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, have denied developing or using chemical weapons, and experts caution that definitive confirmation would require access to suspected sites and witnesses. Still, specialists who examined the materials say the evidence is strongly consistent with the existence of a chemical weapons program.
