Reports indicate that in a private meeting with American officials, representatives from China seemingly acknowledged their involvement in cyber attacks targeting vital US infrastructure. This admission, made in December, suggests a deliberate campaign spanning years, aimed at computer networks controlling essential services like electricity, water, and ports. This action appears to be a veiled warning against the United States supporting Taiwan.
US officials reportedly expressed deep concern upon hearing China's apparent confession to what has been termed the "Volt Typhoon" campaign, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources.
This significant encounter between security teams from these two major global powers reportedly occurred in Geneva, Switzerland, sometime last year during the latter part of the previous US presidential administration.
The prior US administration had already publicly raised alarms about the "Volt Typhoon" campaign, suggesting that China was attempting to embed itself within critical infrastructure, potentially to sow discord and disruption in the event of conflict.
Wang Lei, a high-ranking cyber official within China's foreign ministry, is said to have implied that these cyber intrusions were a consequence of Washington's military support for Taiwan, according to both current and former US officials.
While not directly claiming responsibility for the cyber attacks on the US, American officials reportedly interpreted this statement as an indirect caution against intervening to aid Taiwan should China seek to assert control over the island, which it considers part of its sovereign territory despite Taiwan's long-standing self-governance since 1949.
