A Christian man in northwestern China was reportedly detained after police discovered him listening to the Bible in his car while traveling with his family to visit other believers. The man, identified only as “Brother AK” for security reasons, had an audio Bible stored on a USB device connected to his vehicle when authorities noticed it at a police checkpoint. When questioned, AK reportedly told officers plainly that he was listening because he believed in Jesus. Police detained him while ordering his wife to leave with their children, including a baby. Days passed without his family knowing his whereabouts before they were eventually informed that he would be held for 15 days—yet according to a local partner with persecution watchdog Open Doors, authorities provided no specific charge or official justification for his detention.
Even more troubling, AK’s case does not appear to be isolated. His town is reportedly under intense surveillance, and another Christian in the area was previously detained for 15 days after authorities discovered him listening to the Bible through earphones in public. When police learned that believer had attended Christian gatherings, other members of his church were reportedly questioned and detained as well. Open Doors says incidents like these are becoming increasingly common as Chinese authorities tighten restrictions on religious activity considered threatening to the Communist regime’s ideological control. That pressure is reportedly reaching beyond churches and organized meetings into the personal religious material Christians consume privately for discipleship and fellowship. For believers living under such scrutiny, something as ordinary as listening to Scripture during a drive can potentially expose not only themselves, but their families and fellow Christians to government investigation.
