China Jails Pastors for Obeying God

Feb 5, 2026

A severe crackdown is unfolding in China as the Chinese Communist Party tightens its grip on Christian communities that refuse to place the state above God. Grace Jin Drexel, daughter of imprisoned Pastor Ezra Jin, has described harrowing conditions facing believers detained for nothing more than worshiping outside government control. Her father, founder of the influential Zion Church, was arrested alongside other church leaders after authorities launched a nationwide operation targeting unregistered congregations. Their crime was not political activism, but a simple refusal to acknowledge the Party as the highest authority over the church.

According to Jin Drexel, the offense the regime finds “intolerable” is the belief that sacred decisions belong to God rather than the state. Zion Church, which pioneered online and hybrid worship models, grew rapidly despite repeated attempts to shut it down. That success only drew more scrutiny. Now, detained pastors are reportedly sleeping on cold floors, denied communication with family, refused medical care, and subjected to relentless interrogations. Even basic needs—warm clothing, blankets, and essential medications—are withheld, underscoring how the regime uses suffering as a tool of compliance and intimidation.
