Experts like Gregory Allen from the Center for Strategic and International Studies warn that China could catch up quickly if the U.S. becomes complacent. Recent testing has shown striking improvements in AI performance across the board, especially in areas like reasoning and advanced science, where models have improved by over 40% in some cases. Chinese models are catching up at an alarming pace—in language understanding, the U.S. advantage shrank from 17.5% to 0.3% in just one year. In general reasoning, the gap dropped to 8.1%. Most notably, China’s DeepSeek-R1 outperformed every American model in a top-tier language test.
