China is no longer content with maintaining a minimal nuclear deterrent. Instead, it is undergoing a rapid transformation aimed at achieving nuclear parity—and ultimately supremacy—over the United States. According to the Defense Intelligence Agency, China’s nuclear arsenal has already surpassed 600 operational warheads, with projections estimating 1,000 by 2030 and up to 1,500 by 2035. This represents the fastest nuclear buildup in peacetime history. As Rep. Scott DesJarlais warns, we’ve entered a new, unstable tripolar nuclear era—one where the U.S. must simultaneously contend with both Russia and an increasingly assertive and technologically advanced China. This is not a modernization effort for defense—it’s a strategic posture for coercion and global leverage.
Beyond sheer numbers, China’s military ambitions include hypersonic missiles, mobile ICBMs, stealth-capable bombers, and hardened, AI-integrated launch platforms. Much of this progress is masked behind its civilian nuclear industry, with over two dozen reactors under construction serving dual-use purposes. Under Xi Jinping’s Military-Civil Fusion doctrine, the lines between public, private, and military sectors are deliberately blurred. Meanwhile, U.S. technology has been exploited through espionage and academic infiltration to fast-track China’s nuclear capabilities. This growing arsenal directly impacts the calculus over Taiwan, where Beijing is crafting a credible threat of nuclear escalation to deter U.S. intervention. The West has unwittingly funded and enabled this buildup, and unless decisive action is taken—through decoupling, defensive modernization, and strategic deterrence—the balance of power will tilt irreversibly. China is not merely preparing for war; it is preparing to win one.
