China’s Pregnancy Robot Sparks Debate

Aug 18, 2025

Chinese researchers are pushing the limits of bioengineering with a project that feels ripped from the pages of science fiction. Scientists are developing the world’s first humanoid “pregnancy robot” designed to carry a child to term and deliver a live baby. Unlike traditional incubators, this creation would feature an artificial womb implanted inside a robotic body, capable of sustaining a pregnancy with nutrients delivered through a specialized system. Early reports suggest a prototype could be unveiled as soon as next year, priced at around 100,000 yuan (roughly £10,000).

The initiative, led by Dr. Zhang Qifeng of Kaiwa Technology, aims to simulate the full process of conception through delivery. According to Zhang, artificial womb technology is already “mature” enough to be adapted into a humanoid form, allowing for real human-robot interaction in the process of pregnancy. Ethical and legal debates are already underway, with discussions involving provincial authorities in Guangdong. While developers tout the scientific breakthroughs, questions remain about the moral, societal, and spiritual implications of replacing natural human reproduction with robotic surrogacy.
