Christian Wedding Attacked in Chhattisgarh

Jun 17, 2025

On the evening of June 11, a Christian wedding celebration in Raipur district, Chhattisgarh, was violently attacked by Hindu nationalist extremists. The event, held for a pastor’s relative, quickly turned into a nightmare as the mob inflicted serious injuries on attendees and caused significant property damage, including attempts to set vehicles on fire. As chaos unfolded, terrified guests, including the bride and groom, fled in different directions—some hiding in nearby fields, while others barricaded themselves inside the home to avoid further violence. Despite the gravity of the situation, when victims approached the local police for help, they were allegedly told that there wasn’t enough manpower to provide protection.

The terror didn’t end that night. The next morning, as the groom’s father quietly returned to the village to drop off wedding supplies, he was recognized by some of the same attackers, who then assaulted him and two others so brutally that all three were hospitalized. This brutal incident has sparked outrage among Christians in Chhattisgarh, who say the violence has expanded beyond churches and prayer meetings to now target weddings and personal gatherings. Christian leaders—speaking anonymously for safety—warn that believers are no longer safe in the state, while authorities stand by silently, ignoring escalating violations of constitutional rights. Similar abuses are also being reported in neighboring states, where pastors are facing legal battles over false charges simply for attending private social events.
