More than 50 Christian and Muslim leaders have signed an interfaith peace accord in Abuja, Nigeria, establishing a new organization dedicated to promoting religious harmony across the deeply divided nation. Nigeria's population of more than 200 million is roughly divided between the predominantly Muslim north and largely Christian south, and the country has endured years of devastating violence from Islamist groups including Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province. The agreement was signed during a conference organized by the Saudi Arabia-based Muslim World League, whose secretary-general, Mohammad Al-Issa, said both religious communities were eager to "turn a new page" after years in which extremist ideology has inflicted suffering across the country.
