The Anglican Church of Canada has taken another controversial step into the assisted-suicide debate by approving a pastoral liturgy specifically designed for people choosing Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). Adopted by the denomination's General Synod in June 2026, the resource, titled Pastoral Liturgies at the Time of Death in Contexts of Medically-Assisted Dying, has been authorized for trial use by clergy. The liturgy provides prayers, Scripture readings, confession, absolution, communion, and other pastoral elements surrounding a person's medically assisted death. Rather than simply ministering to grieving families after someone has died, the denomination has now developed an official religious framework for accompanying individuals who have made the deliberate decision to end their lives.
That distinction should trouble Bible-believing Christians. There is an enormous difference between showing compassion toward someone facing unbearable suffering and placing the church's spiritual blessing around the intentional termination of human life. Scripture teaches that human beings are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), that our days ultimately belong to Him (Psalm 139:16), and that innocent human life possesses inherent value because its Creator has given it value. The church's responsibility is to comfort the suffering, care for the dying, proclaim the hope of Christ, and walk beside people through life's darkest valleys—not conform biblical truth to whatever practices the surrounding culture has decided to normalize.
