Church of England Picks Feminist Archbishop

Oct 6, 2025

The Church of England has appointed Sarah Mullally as the next Archbishop of Canterbury—the first woman ever to hold the position. Her election was confirmed by King Charles III following approval by the College of Canons, with her official installation set for March 2026. Mullally, 60, will succeed Justin Welby, whose tenure was marked by progressive activism and political commentary. Many Anglicans had hoped the new appointment would mark a return to biblical orthodoxy, but Mullally’s record suggests a continued shift toward liberal ideology within the Church’s leadership.

A self-described feminist, Mullally has publicly supported abortion rights and endorsed initiatives such as LGBT+ History Month, positions that clash with traditional Christian teaching on the sanctity of life and marriage. Critics argue that her appointment reflects how far the Church of England has strayed from its biblical foundations, even as attendance and influence continue to decline. Once central to the nation’s moral and spiritual life, the state church now seems more aligned with modern secular causes than with the gospel it was established to proclaim.
