Coca-Cola is facing renewed boycott calls after viral tests of its personalized-can website appeared to show a startling discrepancy in what customers were permitted to print. Videos circulating online showed phrases such as “Jesus is King,” “Christ is King,” “Jesus is God,” and “Holy Spirit” being immediately rejected, while references to Satan, Muhammad, Allah, and even derogatory statements about Jesus reportedly advanced to the preview stage. The company’s own rejection notice states that phrases may be prohibited if they are religious, political, trademarked, inappropriate, or otherwise unsuitable. Yet testing reported by multiple outlets found that the automated moderation system was applying those restrictions inconsistently, triggering outrage among Christians who questioned why affirmations about Jesus appeared to receive different treatment.
The controversy became even more troubling as additional testing exposed just how erratic the filtering system was. Fox News Digital reported that “Jesus is Lord” and “Allah is Lord” were blocked, while messages including “God is Dead” and “Atheist Pride” were permitted. Other controversial terms also reportedly slipped through the system. Coca-Cola responded that the customization program was intended to promote positive connections, that submitted designs are subject to further moderation before actually being printed, and that the company was investigating problems with the filtering technology. That distinction matters: an automated preview accepting a phrase does not necessarily mean Coca-Cola would ultimately manufacture the can. Still, when harmless declarations of Christian faith are automatically rejected while openly offensive messages can evade the same safeguards, Christians are justified in asking how such a system was designed and why the inconsistency exists.
