Colombia has officially recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, becoming only the second United Nations member state to do so after the United States. Colombia's Foreign Ministry announced that it views Israeli control of the strategically vital territory as an "essential component" of Israel's national defense and its ability to protect its citizens. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967 and extended Israeli law to the territory in 1981, although most of the international community continues to regard the area as occupied Syrian territory. The United States broke with that international consensus in 2019 when President Donald Trump formally recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan.
The decision represents another dramatic shift in Colombia's relationship with Israel. In July, Colombia ordered the full restoration of diplomatic relations, moved to appoint ambassadors, announced the relocation of its embassy to Jerusalem, and withdrew from South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar praised Colombia's latest decision, emphasizing that Israel lacks strategic depth and therefore requires defensible borders for the protection of the Jewish state. The Golan is particularly important because its elevated terrain overlooks northern Israel and sits directly along the Syrian frontier—a region repeatedly shaken by war, Iranian activity, terrorism, and political upheaval.
