A new Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in Democratic Republic of the Congo, raising fresh concerns across central Africa as health officials race to contain the deadly virus. According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have already been recorded in Ituri province, primarily within the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones. Authorities say the outbreak was confirmed after multiple suspected infections emerged in the remote eastern region, where limited infrastructure and poor transportation networks complicate emergency response efforts.

Health officials are particularly concerned about the risk of the virus spreading beyond Congo’s borders due to the proximity of affected areas to Uganda and South Sudan. The region also faces ongoing instability from armed groups, population displacement, and mining-related migration, all of which increase the difficulty of tracing contacts and isolating infected individuals. Emergency coordination meetings have already been held between African health authorities, neighboring governments, and international partners as efforts intensify to strengthen surveillance, secure resources, and prevent a wider regional health crisis.
