Crucifixion Murder Part of Pastor Hit List

Jun 25, 2025

The shocking murder of Pastor William "Bill" Schonemann has taken an even darker turn as the suspect, 51-year-old Adam Sheafe, confessed not only to the killing but also to planning the execution of 14 additional faith leaders across the country. Pastor Schonemann, a beloved figure in New River, Arizona, was found dead in his home in late April, positioned in a manner resembling crucifixion, with his arms outstretched and pinned. Authorities initially suspected foul play, and later identified Sheafe—who was arrested on unrelated charges—as the primary suspect. In a chilling on-camera interview, Sheafe detailed how he traveled from California following an early release from federal prison, with plans to target pastors beginning in Arizona. His motive, he claimed, stemmed from a belief that Christian leaders were misleading people spiritually.

Sheafe’s plans reportedly included symbolic elements, such as leaving crowns of thorns and copies of the Ten Commandments at the murder scenes. He admitted to choosing Schonemann randomly after changing his mind about another intended victim. Despite acknowledging the premeditated and religiously motivated nature of his crimes, Sheafe insisted that he believed God would forgive him. Investigators confirmed that the murders were carefully planned and that Sheafe had created a hit list of pastors. Law enforcement agencies have since alerted those on the list and are working with federal and local authorities to assess further threats. Sheafe remains in custody at the Coconino County Detention Center and has expressed a willingness to plead guilty, even requesting the death penalty.
