Dam Discovery Confirms Pool of Siloam Link

Aug 29, 2025

Archaeologists in Jerusalem’s City of David have uncovered a massive dam near the Pool of Siloam, offering new insight into both biblical history and ancient engineering. Long associated with King Hezekiah and his tunnel that redirected water from the Gihon Spring, the pool was the site where Jesus healed a blind man (John 9). However, new scientific dating shows this dam predates Hezekiah by nearly two centuries, placing its construction around 805–795 BC, during the reigns of Kings Joash or Amaziah. Researchers suggest it may have been built to combat flash floods and provide water security during a period of climatic instability, highlighting the ingenuity of Judah’s early rulers.

The find reshapes our understanding of Judah’s history, suggesting that King Joash, remembered for his temple renovations, may also have been a visionary builder who fortified Jerusalem’s water system. The discovery underscores how archaeological and climate research together can illuminate Scripture, revealing that the biblical account is grounded in real places and events. For Christians, the Pool of Siloam holds deep spiritual meaning, as it points to the Messiah who brought both physical and spiritual healing. This dam is not merely an ancient structure but a reminder of God’s providence, protecting His people through the ages and affirming the reliability of His Word.
