Dearborn Heights Police Add Arabic to Patch

Sep 5, 2025

The Dearborn Heights Police Department in Michigan has introduced a newly designed patch that includes Arabic script, making it the first in the U.S. to do so. The patch, designed by one of the officers, features the Michigan state seal in the center with “Dearborn Heights Police” written in both English and Arabic. City officials said the move reflects the community’s diversity and is intended to promote representation in a city where more than one-third of the population is of Arab descent.

The announcement, however, sparked sharp division. The department had to disable comments on its Facebook post after many responses turned hostile, with critics insisting that English should remain the sole language on uniforms and comparing the Arabic script to “terrorist symbols.” Some went as far as accusing the city of paving the way for Sharia law. Supporters, on the other hand, welcomed the change as a gesture of inclusivity and recognition of the city’s cultural makeup. The mixed reactions highlight the broader tensions in America over language, identity, and representation in public institutions.
