Dearborn Mayor Clashes with Christian

Sep 17, 2025

Tensions erupted in Dearborn, Michigan, when Mayor Abdullah Hammoud clashed with resident Ted Barham during a heated city council meeting. Barham, a Christian local, spoke out against the honorary renaming of Warren Avenue for Osama Siblani, a community leader with a history of pro-Hezbollah remarks documented by MEMRI. Comparing the move to honoring terror groups, Barham argued the decision was provocative and inappropriate. Hammoud, however, fired back, calling Barham a “bigot” and “Islamophobe,” ultimately declaring him “not welcome” in the city—a statement that has ignited debates over free speech, tolerance, and civic representation.

The controversy is magnified by Dearborn’s demographics, its history of anti-Israel activism, and Hammoud’s family ties to the Islamic Center of America. While Siblani defended his record and stood by his controversial statements, critics see the mayor’s rebuke as a troubling example of exclusionary rhetoric against Christians in a city where dissent against entrenched views is increasingly unwelcome. The clash underscores deeper cultural divides, raising questions about how faith, politics, and identity are shaping public life in America’s most prominent Arab American community.
