Diaspora Jews Warn Against PA State Recognition

Sep 22, 2025

Jewish communities across the diaspora are sounding alarms over efforts at the United Nations to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state. Groups from the UK, France, Canada, and Australia cautioned that such recognition would embolden Hamas and be seen as a direct reward for the October 7 massacre. Organizations including the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, and the Executive Council of Australian Jews warned their governments that bypassing conditions like disarmament and hostage release is reckless. They argued that unconditional recognition would not advance peace but instead undermine prospects for a two-state solution rooted in genuine security for both peoples.

These warnings come as Hamas officials themselves openly boast about exploiting diplomatic recognition as a victory. Senior Hamas leader Ghazi Hamad called statehood recognition one of the “fruits of October 7,” praising the massacre of 1,200 Israelis as the start of repeated attacks. Hamas still holds dozens of hostages in Gaza, yet many Western governments have not tied recognition to their release. Jewish leaders in France wrote to President Emmanuel Macron, asking how recognition could be justified while hostages remain in captivity and antisemitism surges across Europe. In Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney claimed recognition would rest on reform commitments, but Jewish groups noted he provided no specifics.

In London, the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council pressed Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer for clarity on Britain’s intentions, warning that unconditional recognition could incentivize Hamas to prolong the conflict rather than seek a ceasefire. French Jewish leaders echoed the same concerns, warning that such moves risk legitimizing terror and fueling antisemitism at home. Diaspora leaders across the West argue that their governments’ positions dangerously ignore the central role of Hamas and its Iranian backers in perpetuating war and violence. They conclude that recognition under these conditions is not a step toward peace, but a symbolic victory for extremists.
