A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has introduced the Digital Age Assurance Act, legislation that would require operating system providers such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft to collect a user's age during device setup and securely share an age signal with app developers. The proposal is designed to shift age verification away from individual apps and place it at the operating system level, allowing developers to determine whether users are minors without repeatedly requesting personal information. Supporters argue the bill will better protect children online while reducing the amount of sensitive data shared across countless platforms.
Critics, however, warn that the legislation represents another significant step toward embedding digital identity verification into the infrastructure of everyday technology. While the bill emphasizes privacy protections and prohibits the sale of age-related data, opponents argue that requiring operating systems to become gatekeepers of identity creates a framework that could eventually expand beyond age verification alone. As governments continue pursuing online safety initiatives, the underlying architecture for digital credentials, identity verification, and controlled access is becoming increasingly commonplace.
