China is moving closer to launching a new blockchain-powered international payment system that could reshape how money moves across borders. According to reports, the platform, known as mBridge, is being developed with the support of the central banks of China, Hong Kong, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Using distributed ledger technology, the system is designed to facilitate real-time transactions between participating financial institutions while bypassing many of the traditional banking channels that currently dominate international commerce. Supporters say the platform will lower costs, increase speed, and make cross-border payments more accessible to businesses around the world.
The project has already processed billions of dollars in testing and has seen growing use of China's digital yuan. A Hong Kong-based entity is expected to oversee the platform's commercial rollout, with transaction fees reportedly costing roughly half as much as conventional systems. The initiative also complements China's broader effort to internationalize its currency and expand financial ties with nations participating in its Belt and Road Initiative. While the U.S. dollar remains the dominant global reserve currency, mBridge represents another step toward a more multipolar financial landscape where alternative payment networks play an increasingly significant role.
