Druze Leader Urges Action Amid Syria Attacks

Jul 28, 2025

Sheikh Muwaffaq Tarif, the spiritual leader of Israel’s Druze community, expressed grave concern in an exclusive interview with i24NEWS regarding the deteriorating situation in southern Syria. Describing the so-called ceasefire as nonexistent, Tarif reported ongoing attacks by ISIS-linked groups on Druze villages and homes. He voiced strong disappointment with the Syrian regime’s failure to protect its minority populations, including Druze, Christians, Kurds, and Alawites, stating that massacres persist while the global community remains largely silent. Tarif confirmed daily communication with Druze leadership in Sweida, including spiritual head Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, and firmly denied Syrian media claims that the Druze militias are backed by Israel, emphasizing that their actions are solely defensive.

Following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Tarif stressed the urgent humanitarian crisis, noting that Druze areas in Syria lack electricity, water, medicine, and basic necessities, with hospitals overwhelmed by casualties. Although some Druze have expressed frustration over what they perceive as Israel’s delayed response, Tarif affirmed the community’s continued support for military service in Israel, highlighting their solidarity during the October 7 attacks. He criticized Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa for his regime’s inability to suppress jihadist threats, calling for decisive action to protect all minorities. While some Syrian Druze have proposed annexation by Israel, Tarif was cautious, affirming that Sweida is part of Syria and expressing hope that international mediation will prioritize safety, dignity, and freedom for all minority communities.
