DSA Backs Omar Fateh for Minneapolis Mayor

Jul 15, 2025

Omar Fateh, a Minnesota state senator and member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has announced his campaign for mayor of Minneapolis. Backed by a coalition of far-left groups—including the DSA, Sunrise Movement, and SEIU—Fateh is promoting a progressive agenda that includes freezing rent, raising the minimum wage to $20 by 2028, prohibiting cooperation with ICE, and implementing policies aimed at expanding abortion access and gender-related medical care. His platform mirrors that of other DSA-aligned politicians like New York City’s Zohran Mamdani, signaling a coordinated push by socialist activists to secure leadership in major liberal cities.

Fateh’s vision for Minneapolis includes a range of initiatives rooted in socialist ideology: fare-free public transit, a ban on fossil fuels, the elimination of evictions, and the cancellation of rent, mortgage, and utility payments. He has also supported dismantling the Minneapolis Police Department in favor of a Department of Public Safety—a measure previously rejected by voters. His campaign rhetoric, framed as resistance to a “hostile White House,” positions Minneapolis as a sanctuary city and a testing ground for leftist policy experimentation. As this movement gains traction, critics warn it reflects a growing trend of Marxist-aligned leadership rising in America’s urban centers.
