Scientists studying geothermal springs in Zambia say they may have discovered evidence that a new tectonic plate boundary is beginning to form beneath sub-Saharan Africa. Researchers analyzing gases from hot springs along the Kafue Rift detected unusually high helium isotope ratios linked directly to Earth’s mantle, suggesting that a weakness in the crust has opened deep enough for mantle fluids to rise toward the surface. The findings point to active rifting within the massive Southwest African Rift System, a 2,500-kilometer-long zone stretching from Tanzania to Namibia. Scientists believe this could represent the early stages of continental breakup similar to the well-known East African Rift System.
According to the researchers, the Kafue Rift contains many of the same geological signatures seen in established rift zones, including geothermal anomalies, hot springs, and mantle-derived gases escaping through fractures in Earth’s crust. By comparing helium isotope levels with those found in the East African Rift, scientists concluded that the region is likely tectonically active. While the process of continental separation moves extremely slowly on a human timescale, the long-term implications could eventually reshape the African continent itself. Researchers also noted that active rift zones may provide valuable geothermal energy sources as well as access to helium and hydrogen resources that could become economically important in the future.
