Earth Trembles as the Doomsday Glacier Cracks

Jan 13, 2026

A chilling signal is rising from the frozen edge of the world. Scientists have detected hundreds of earthquakes rippling through Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier—often called the “Doomsday Glacier”—as massive sections of ice fracture and slide into the sea. This towering ice sheet, nearly the size of Great Britain, holds enough water to raise global sea levels by several feet. Now, seismic activity is revealing what satellite images have only hinted at: the glacier is breaking apart from within.

More than 360 previously undetected ice quakes have been recorded over the last decade, most originating from Thwaites itself. Researchers believe these tremors are triggered by massive icebergs calving into the ocean—violent events powerful enough to register like earthquakes. With much of the world’s coastlines and major cities already vulnerable to rising seas, this instability represents a looming global threat. Even scientists now admit the collapse could unfold faster than expected, potentially within decades—or even years.
