European Commission Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera has issued the EU’s harshest criticism of Israel since the start of the Gaza War, claiming the destruction in Gaza “looks very much like genocide.” In an interview with Politico’s Brussels Playbook, Ribera accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting Palestinian civilians for extermination. She described a population “being targeted, killed, and condemned to starve to death,” deprived of homes, food, water, and medicine, and subjected to ongoing bombardment and gunfire—even while seeking humanitarian aid. She further alleged that witnesses are barred from entering, leaving “any humanity absent” from the situation.
Ribera, a Spanish socialist leader, concluded that while she stopped short of formally declaring it genocide, the actions closely align with the accepted definition of the term. Her remarks mark a significant escalation in the EU’s public stance, but as of this report, Israel Hayom noted the European Union has not responded to its request for official comment on Ribera’s statements.
