Starting October 12, travel to much of Europe will come with a new layer of security for U.S. passport holders. The system is designed to track the 90-day stay limit within a 180-day period, ensuring tourists don’t overstay without the need to flip through passport stamps.

While the new biometric checks streamline record-keeping for border officials, they also mean longer wait times at passport control. Even with fingerprints and photos stored digitally, travelers will still be required to carry their passports. For anyone with tight connections or short layovers, this added screening step could make travel more stressful, so it’s wise to plan for extra time at airports.
