America’s surveillance infrastructure may be entering a new phase as license plate readers evolve from tracking vehicles to tracking people themselves. According to reports, defense contractor Leonardo US has developed a system known as SignalTrace that adds Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and RFID detection capabilities to existing license plate camera networks. Rather than simply recording a vehicle’s registration number, the technology can reportedly collect identifying signals from smartphones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds, vehicle electronics, and even pet microchips. By combining these electronic signatures, the system creates what developers describe as a unique digital fingerprint that can identify an individual regardless of which vehicle they are driving.
The implications extend far beyond traffic enforcement. Product materials indicate that SignalTrace can identify people through the collection of device clusters, allowing authorities to track movements even if a license plate is changed, obscured, or absent. Smartphones, fitness trackers, in-car Wi-Fi systems, RFID cards, and other connected devices effectively become beacons that reveal a person’s location and travel patterns. Critics warn that such technology blurs the line between public safety and mass surveillance, particularly in a society where few legal protections currently exist to limit the collection and storage of this information. The concern is not merely about vehicles being monitored, but about individuals becoming permanently traceable through the devices they carry every day.
