New archaeological discoveries along the southeastern shore of the Dead Sea may pinpoint the long-lost cities of Sodom and Gomorrah—once dismissed by skeptics as myth. Dr. Titus Kennedy, a field archaeologist with the Discovery Institute, has uncovered striking evidence that aligns with the biblical account of divine judgment. Excavations near ancient Zoar, the only one of the five “Cities of the Plain” never lost to history, reveal destruction patterns consistent with fire “raining from heaven.” At Bab edh-Dhra—widely regarded as the most likely candidate for Sodom—archaeologists uncovered charnel houses and tombs that burned from the top down, indicating fire that came from above, not from within. Embedded in the surrounding soil are sulfur balls—golf ball to tennis ball-sized spheres of pure brimstone, a direct physical parallel to Genesis 19:24: “Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven.”
Just south of the site, Kennedy’s team identified Numeira as the probable location of Gomorrah. Beneath a collapsed tower, human skeletons were discovered in situ—victims who died suddenly, their remains preserved like those found in Pompeii. Nearby ruins at Feifa and Khanazir also display signs of fiery destruction and thick ash layers, consistent with the same catastrophic event. In contrast, Zoar—the refuge city where Lot fled—remained intact, as Scripture records. Its continued habitation throughout the Byzantine period, even retaining its biblical name, stands as enduring testimony of mercy amid judgment. For prophecy watchers, this discovery not only validates the historical reliability of Genesis but also serves as a stark reminder: divine patience is great, but judgment is real. As Jesus said in Luke 17:29, “It rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all—so it will be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.”
