Faith Leaders Urge Trump to Guide AI Ethically

May 23, 2025

Around a dozen high-profile Evangelical leaders have issued a public appeal urging President Donald Trump to take a leading role in guiding the development of artificial intelligence (AI), while also addressing its inherent risks. Released Wednesday, their letter titled "Christianity in the Age of AI: An Appeal for Wise Leadership" expresses hope in AI’s potential to solve real-world problems but warns against the dangers of autonomous, smarter-than-human machines. Signatories include notable figures such as Rev. Johnnie Moore, Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, Assemblies of God Superintendent Doug Clay, and Tim Clinton of the American Association of Christian Counselors. They describe Trump as the “AI President,” stating that his return to office aligns with AI’s global ascendancy and that his leadership is divinely appointed for this pivotal moment in technological history.

The letter advocates for the establishment of a presidential advisory council consisting of ethicists, people of faith, and others with non-commercial priorities to ensure AI development remains ethical and human-centered. Rev. Moore, speaking with The Christian Post, described himself as both an “AI accelerationist and an AI alarmist,” stressing the urgency of U.S. leadership in the field while cautioning against its potential for disruption and misuse. He highlighted the risks of AI weaponization, knowledge-sector displacement, and the threat of uncontrollable systems, while also warning against public paranoia similar to the nuclear fears of the 1980s. Moore emphasized the need for a non-partisan, merit-based council independent of lobbyists and driven not by profit or security interests, but by a commitment to social and ethical responsibility. The appeal represents a growing awareness within the faith community of AI's profound impact, even referencing the new Pope Leo XIV’s concern for defending human dignity in the AI era.
