Famine Warning Linked to Iran War

May 5, 2026

Humanitarian leader and chef José Andrés is warning that the world may be heading toward a prolonged famine driven by the ripple effects of conflict with Iran. Speaking at an economic conference, Andrés pointed to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—not just for oil, but for critical fertilizer shipments—as a key factor threatening global agriculture. He explained that delays in fertilizer delivery can cripple planting cycles, reducing crop yields months later and setting off a chain reaction that impacts food availability worldwide.

The concern is not immediate shortages, but a delayed crisis building beneath the surface. As fertilizer supplies tighten and costs rise, farmers across the globe face mounting challenges that could result in smaller harvests and higher prices. While wealthier nations may absorb modest increases, Andrés emphasized that vulnerable regions will feel the impact far more severely. In places already struggling with food insecurity, even small disruptions can translate into widespread hunger and suffering.

Andrés also warned that rising military spending and geopolitical tensions are diverting attention and resources away from addressing food needs. As nations invest heavily in defense and tighten borders, the underlying pressures of hunger continue to grow. This highlights how interconnected global systems can unravel quickly when conflict disrupts essential supply chains. When the flow of resources like food and fertilizer is interrupted, the consequences extend far beyond politics, shaping the stability of entire populations.
