First Shtei HaLechem Offering in 2000 Years

Jun 9, 2025

In a landmark moment on Monday, June 2, Jewish worshippers ascended the Temple Mount and performed the Shtei HaLechem (Two Loaves) offering for Shavuot—an act not seen since the destruction of the Second Temple nearly 2,000 years ago. Kohanim (priests) from the Temple Mount movement, dressed in full priestly garments, approached what is believed to be the site of the ancient Temple courtyard. Despite opposition from police and Waqf officials, they managed to wave the loaves in accordance with halacha (Jewish law), under the supervision of Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, head of the Temple Institute. The Kohen sanctified his hands and feet using a ritual vessel at the Azarah (Temple courtyard), and successfully completed the offering before being removed by authorities.

This deeply symbolic act was marked by an emotional “Shehechiyanu” blessing from Rabbi Ariel, with the gathered public responding with “Amen.” According to the “Return to the Mount” movement, this event signifies the revival of priestly service on the Temple Mount and a spiritual turning point for the Jewish people. The group called on the Israeli government to officially reinstate Temple service and sacrificial offerings, claiming that doing so is the only path to national restoration and peace in the midst of current conflicts.
