A growing political and cultural battle is unfolding in New York as two Democrat congressional candidates voiced support for using federal funds to support “Drag Story Hour” programs aimed at children. Representative Dan Goldman and former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander both indicated support for publicly funded LGBTQ-themed programming, including drag queen reading events hosted in schools and libraries. Their comments come as reports show New York taxpayers have already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars subsidizing programs organized by Drag Artists for Expression NYC, formerly known as Drag Story Hour NYC.
The organization partners with schools and public libraries to host events where drag performers read books to children, many of which introduce themes surrounding gender identity and transgender ideology. Critics argue the programs increasingly move beyond entertainment into ideological activism targeting young children. Reports note that some books presented during these events include stories about children identifying as the opposite gender, while previous investigations revealed taxpayer-funded drag performances occurring in public schools without clear parental awareness or consent. Despite ongoing controversy, supporters of the program continue framing the events as inclusive educational experiences and artistic expression.
