Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Space weather expert Ben Davidson has raised alarms about what he believes is a looming geomagnetic catastrophe that could devastate civilization. He warns that Earth’s weakening magnetic field and shifting poles may expose humanity to solar storms on a scale that could cripple power grids, water supplies, and agriculture. While Davidson ties his timeline to cycles he believes happen every 6,000 to 12,000 years, as a young earth creationist I recognize that the earth is not millions of years old, nor has it been through endless cycles of destruction and renewal. Instead, what scientists describe as “ancient cycles” are more accurately signs of a groaning creation (Romans 8:22), awaiting redemption and the fulfillment of God’s plan.
Davidson points to the Carrington Event of 1859 as an example of how devastating even a single geomagnetic storm can be. That storm set telegraph wires on fire and shocked operators, yet in today’s technology-driven society, the consequences would be far more catastrophic. Within days, fuel would run out, store shelves would be empty, and emergency services would collapse. He describes a possible 90 percent population loss if such an event occurred now. While secular experts frame this as a matter of natural “geodynamo” currents in the earth’s molten core, believers understand that ultimate control rests in the hands of the Creator, not random natural forces.
These warnings remind us of Jesus’ prophecy that in the last days, there would be signs in the heavens, distress among nations, and fear of what is coming upon the earth (Luke 21:25–26). The increase in auroras, the rapid pole shifts, and the weakening of the earth’s protective shield are not just scientific curiosities—they are reminders that God’s Word is true, and that His creation is pointing us to the return of Christ. While the world looks to science for answers, Scripture shows us the bigger picture: the earth is not spiraling through endless ages of random cycles, but moving toward a divinely appointed climax of history. The real question is not whether humanity can survive a solar storm, but whether we are ready for the Lord’s return.
