Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

Germany has taken a troubling step toward normalized state intrusion, rebranding expanded surveillance powers as “transparency.” A newly approved bill would allow regulators to enter media offices and digital platforms without a warrant, bypassing judicial oversight entirely. Framed as a necessary measure to police political advertising, the so-called Political Advertising Transparency Act grants sweeping inspection authority based on the loosely defined claim of “imminent danger.” What sounds like accountability quickly reveals itself as unchecked power.
Under the proposal, the telecom regulator Bundesnetzagentur would gain search powers traditionally reserved for criminal investigations. Journalists warn this opens the door to exposure of confidential sources, protected data, and active investigations—simply because a bureaucrat suspects a paperwork violation. Legal experts argue the law undermines Germany’s Basic Law protections guaranteeing the inviolability of private spaces. Yet officials dismiss these concerns, insisting this is merely regulatory alignment with EU standards. History, however, shows that press freedom erodes not through dramatic crackdowns, but through incremental “exceptions.”
This development aligns with Scripture’s warnings of growing surveillance, suppression of truth, and authority shifting away from justice toward control (Isaiah 59:14; Amos 5:10). When regulators—not judges—decide when speech must be “inspected,” the line between governance and coercion disappears. Revelation describes a future system intolerant of dissent and hostile to truth, where control is exercised under moral and civic pretenses. Germany’s move is not the final fulfillment—but it is another marker along the path toward normalized state oversight of speech and information. For watchmen, this is a reminder: the infrastructure of control is often built quietly, justified by noble language, and accepted before its consequences are fully realized.
