More than 100 children age 12 or younger were referred to Britain's Forced Marriage Unit between 2021 and 2025 over concerns involving actual, potential, or suspected forced marriages, according to newly released Home Office data obtained through a Freedom of Information request. Among them were 62 children age 10 or younger and an astonishing 27 age five or younger. The figures do not mean that every child was ultimately forced into marriage; younger cases can involve a promised future marriage, a sibling connected to another case, or concerns requiring authorities to intervene before a ceremony occurs. Even with that important distinction, campaigners have called the numbers deeply disturbing. Forced marriage is illegal across the United Kingdom, and since 2023 it has been illegal in England and Wales to cause anyone under 18 to marry, even when authorities cannot prove coercion was used.
