Global Outcry Over Gaza Offensive

May 20, 2025

Israel’s intensified military campaign in Gaza has drawn strong condemnation from the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Canada, who described the unfolding humanitarian crisis as “intolerable” and called for an immediate ceasefire. In a joint statement released on May 19, 2025, through the UK government’s official website, the leaders criticized Israel’s restrictions on humanitarian aid, labeling the decision to allow only limited food deliveries into Gaza as “wholly inadequate.” They urged Israel to cooperate with the United Nations to ensure aid is delivered according to international humanitarian principles and condemned remarks by Israeli officials that appeared to support the forced displacement of civilians.

While reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defense in response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack—which they called “heinous”—the joint statement asserted that the current Israeli military response is “wholly disproportionate.” The leaders warned that if Israel continues its operations and restricts aid, their governments may consider “further concrete actions,” including potential sanctions. They also denounced ongoing Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank as illegal and a major obstacle to peace. Emphasizing the need for a negotiated two-state solution, the leaders backed diplomatic efforts led by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, and referenced the June 2024 New York peace conference as a turning point. The statement concluded with support for the upcoming UN-led High-Level Two-State Solution Conference in June 2025, positioning it as vital to securing long-term stability and a viable path toward Palestinian statehood.
