Google Rolls Out Global ID System

Google has expanded the digital ID capabilities of Google Wallet into four major new markets: India, Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil. The move adds Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials in India and passport-based digital ID passes in the other three nations. Users can now store identity credentials directly on their phones and use them for everyday verification tasks, showing how quickly digital identity systems are spreading across the world.

In India, the rollout is especially significant because it connects with Aadhaar, one of the largest biometric identity systems on earth, covering more than 1.4 billion registrations. Google says users can share only the specific information needed for each transaction, such as proving age for cinema tickets or identity checks at hospitals. Early partners include cinema chains, marriage platforms, and visa application services. In Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil, users can create secure digital ID passes using passport data to simplify identity checks without carrying physical documents.

The expansion builds on Google’s existing support for mobile driver’s licenses and IDs in parts of the United States and places the company in direct competition with Apple and government-run wallet systems. The larger story is the rapid normalization of portable digital credentials tied to commerce, travel, and access. Systems once discussed as future possibilities are now being adopted by billions in real time. As nations and corporations merge convenience with identity verification, the architecture for a far more controlled world continues to rise quietly and swiftly.
