Gulf Watch: The War Footing Tightens

Feb 10, 2026

Open-source intelligence watchers spent the weekend tracking an unusual surge of U.S. military movement into Europe and the Middle East, with particular focus on the Persian Gulf. Reports point to a heavy concentration of strategic airlift assets—C-17 Globemaster III aircraft—appearing across key hubs like Ramstein Air Base in Germany and Al Udeid in Qatar. While exact numbers remain debated, the pattern itself is hard to ignore: tankers, surveillance aircraft, drones, and naval patrols converging near Iran, even as diplomatic tensions simmer and internal unrest continues inside the Islamic Republic.

Beyond aircraft parked on runways, patrol activity over the Persian Gulf tells its own story. U.S. Navy surveillance planes have been flying repeated maritime routes south of Iran, while aerial refueling assets briefly appeared close enough to raise eyebrows before tracking feeds went dark. Combined with the presence of a U.S. carrier strike group in the region, the posture resembles prior large-scale operations where airlift preceded decisive action. Analysts note that while this may be deterrence, the scale suggests preparation—not mere signaling—especially under an administration led once again by Donald Trump, whose foreign policy has historically favored bold, rapid escalation.
