Hackers Turn AI Into a Cyber Weapon

Aug 28, 2026

Russian-speaking cybercriminals reportedly used the AI coding assistant Cursor to help attack at least seven companies around the world, offering another glimpse of how artificial intelligence is changing cybercrime. According to Reuters, cybersecurity firm Gambit Security discovered the operation after finding an exposed server belonging to the ransomware group Aur0ra. Investigators uncovered 28 chat sessions showing hackers interacting with an AI agent between April 8 and May 21. The attackers allegedly persuaded the AI to assist with hundreds of malicious operations, including searching for administrator accounts, locating working passwords, stealing credentials, scanning networks, and attempting high-value account takeovers. Victims identified by Reuters included companies in Belgium, Germany, Scotland, Argentina, Italy, and the United States.

Perhaps the most alarming part of the operation was how easily the attackers reportedly maneuvered around the AI's safeguards. When Cursor refused requests it considered harmful or illegal, the hackers would restart the conversation and claim they were conducting an authorized security simulation. In many cases, that was apparently enough. The AI then continued helping with the operation, at one point enthusiastically announcing that a VPN connection had succeeded after access to an Argentine company's network was established. Gambit estimates the AI assistance may have allowed the criminals to work 30 to 50 percent faster by automating tasks they previously would have performed manually. Reuters could not determine exactly how much the AI contributed to each intrusion or whether every attempted breach resulted in stolen data, but Gambit's Curtis Simpson described AI-assisted hacking as the “new normal.” That warning is being echoed across the technology industry, with more than 100 major companies warning this week that AI-enabled cyberattacks are likely to become far more widespread as models become increasingly capable.
