Hamas Pushes 7-Year Truce

Jun 2, 2025

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff sharply criticized Hamas’ latest response to the proposed ceasefire deal, calling it “totally unacceptable” and a step backward in the ongoing negotiations. A senior official close to the talks revealed that Hamas' counterproposal diverged significantly from Israel’s terms. Among Hamas’ demands were a ceasefire lasting up to seven years, full Israeli withdrawal from areas gained since March, cancellation of the new humanitarian aid model, and a return to previous distribution systems—terms viewed by officials as outright rejection rather than a basis for negotiation.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office reaffirmed Israel's commitment to the updated Witkoff framework, emphasizing that Hamas remains uncooperative and unwilling to move forward. Hamas, however, denied rejecting the proposal, accusing Witkoff of bias and claiming the offer was intended to achieve a permanent ceasefire and humanitarian relief. According to reports, Hamas proposed a phased release of hostages—10 living individuals and 18 deceased—spread out over two months, in exchange for a negotiated number of Palestinian prisoners. Despite the public exchange of accusations, the gap between the two sides remains wide, casting doubt on any near-term resolution.
