Hanukkah Massacre Shocks Australia

Dec 15, 2025

The murder of at least 16 people at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach marks one of the deadliest antisemitic terror attacks in Australia’s history and underscores the accelerating global hatred toward the Jewish people. Authorities confirmed that the shooting, which wounded dozens more and hospitalized at least 42—including a child—was a deliberate terrorist act aimed at Sydney’s Jewish community. The attack occurred on the first night of Hanukkah as nearly 1,000 people gathered in a public, open-air celebration. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese rightly labeled the massacre an “evil act of antisemitism,” while New South Wales Premier Chris Minns stated plainly that it was designed to target Jews. Two suspects, a father and son, were apprehended, one later dying from injuries sustained during the incident.

This atrocity did not emerge in a vacuum. Australia has seen a dramatic rise in antisemitic incidents since the Gaza war began in 2023, with Jewish leaders repeatedly warning government officials that violence was inevitable if the trend continued unchecked. According to the Anti-Defamation League, 1,654 antisemitic incidents were reported in Australia this year alone—more than triple the numbers from just two years ago. What unfolded on Bondi Beach is the grim fulfillment of those warnings and a sobering reminder that Jewish communities worldwide are increasingly viewed as “soft targets.” From a prophetic lens, this growing hostility aligns with Scripture’s repeated warnings that the Jewish people would face escalating hatred in the last days (Zechariah 12:3; Matthew 24:9). As the spiritual and ideological war against Israel intensifies, events like this serve as stark indicators that the ancient hatred has not only returned—but is accelerating on a global stage.
