Haredi Rabbi Opens Temple Door

A rare and highly significant statement from a prominent Haredi rabbi is adding fuel to the growing discussion surrounding the Temple Mount and the possibility of renewed Jewish religious activity at Judaism’s holiest site. Rabbi Dr. Yitzchak Breitowitz, a senior lecturer at Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem, recently addressed the complex issue of ascending the Temple Mount according to Jewish law. While noting that he personally has never ascended the mount and remains cautious, Breitowitz acknowledged that there are areas considered permissible for ritually impure individuals to enter, provided they avoid the location traditionally associated with the Holy of Holies near the Dome of the Rock.

Breitowitz explained that longstanding Jewish tradition and careful measurements have allowed religious authorities to identify “safe zones” on the Temple Mount where observant Jews may legally walk after ritual immersion in a mikveh. His comments mark another example of a gradual shift among some ultra-Orthodox voices regarding Jewish presence on the mount, an issue historically opposed by much of the Haredi world. Temple Mount advocates welcomed the remarks enthusiastically, arguing that every rabbinic endorsement moves Israel closer to restoring Jewish worship on the mount and eventually rebuilding the Temple itself. Several other Haredi rabbis have also begun encouraging or permitting ascents in recent years, signaling what many view as a major religious and political transition.
