HHS Halts $500M mRNA Projects Over Risks

Aug 8, 2025

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will cancel $500 million in vaccine development projects utilizing mRNA technology. In a statement and accompanying video posted to X, Kennedy—who has long been skeptical of mRNA vaccines—explained that the decision followed a review of scientific data and consultations with top experts at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He said HHS concluded that, for respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 and influenza, the risks of mRNA technology outweigh the benefits. The cancellation will terminate existing contracts with Emory University and Tiba Biotech, and will reject pending proposals from companies including Pfizer, Sanofi Pasteur, CSL Seqirus, and Gritstone.
